Local Schools Partner With University for Weekend Tutoring Programme

A new weekend tutoring programme is pairing university students with local secondary school pupils preparing for exams, run out of the library on Saturday mornings.

The programme grew out of a conversation between the Widening Participation team and two local headteachers who were looking for free, low-pressure academic support for pupils who might not otherwise have access to tutoring.

University student volunteers, most of them former pupils of the partner schools, run small-group sessions in maths, English and science. "It's strange being back on the other side of a desk," said one volunteer, a second-year student who attended one of the partner schools herself. "But it's a good kind of strange."

The programme runs weekly through the school term and is open to any of the four partner schools.
